LOS ANGELES TOUR DIARY

The above photo has nothing to do with any of my gigs in LA but its a pretty funny photo of myself and my old roommate Paparazzi djing as “Los Loboz” for Cinco De Mayo a few years back (which explains the all over print and garishly colored headphones). What reminded me of this is one of the shows I played in LA was for The Electric Friends dudes at the Standard in West Hollywood, where I was booked to play under my christian name, Johnny Love. I got to play 3ball, cumbia, etc (under the umbrella term of dronkey music) to a bunch of drunk white women, which works exceedingly well because as I have discovered, that shit is like dubstep for girls. Put on some kind of latin-y percussion or rhythm and girls start going nuts, its like catnip for vaginas. My record as “Johnny Love” is coming out on T&A next month but 2 of the tracks on the forthcoming EP were featured on the Takeover compilation which you can listen to here:

Takeover by T&ARecords

Anyone who recently discovered me might be confused by the completely different tracks from Deathface that these are, but, I’m a DJ first and foremost (well, maybe a degenerate first and foremost, but thats neither here nor there) and if you only listen to one style of music you’re cheating yourself. Its like kids that say “i listen to everything but country” when country (pre nashville glam bs) is actually completely fucking awesome. Anyway, LA for 2 weeks was fun, I got to play hardstyle at an actual rave in downtown LA, got to play my favorite party in the country DANCE at the Arena, and didnt take any photos because I got too drunk every goddamn night and ended up throwing up in my friend car after making the mistake of ordering chicken florentine crepes at IHOP (wtf).

Decided on a whim to drive out to Palm Springs for the sunday T&B pool party at the Ace Hotel where the fucking Naluark followed me again, (I’ve seen that fucking squid 3 times on this trip, whats the deal). Also got to debut my confederate flag shorts at a pool party (previous appearance in Houston prompted a dude to tell my my shorts were offensive) where I got tons of compliments, including from 2 black dudes and I was photographed by Victorias Secret scouts who were there to document what was going to be “in” for next season, so keep an eye out for when the fight for states rights comes to a boutique near you, it will have been all my fault, if only I could find a photo of this shit, oh well, heres a photo of The Captain looking like a goblin in the hot tub for good measure:

Also if you ever find yourself inebriated past 2am in Los Angeles and feel the desire for some dim sum, go to Won Kok in Chinatown where you’ll be greeted by the man who Drop the Lime stole his haircut from. We all know, when you get that late night craving, Won Kok is all you need.

DUB DORADO IN SAN DIEGO TOUR DIARY

I first had the pleasure of going to Dub Dorado about 3 months ago when I also got to meet fellow Magic: The Gathering player Dillon Francis. The party was great, the drinks were delicious (get a Mule whenever you go to El Dorado), and the promoter, Mr. Biggs, was awesome, so I couldnt wait to come and DJ the party myself. Needless to say, the party didnt disappoint, and they went all out and made it a bloodbath

KNOW YOUR HISTORY MONDAYS

I was told that I should have more on my site than just my tour diary so every Monday I’ll be posting a song that I’m a fan of and/or has influenced my taste today. The first entry I’m picking after having been at the Trouble & Bass pool party out in Palm Springs for Coachella, its the perfect summer song.

HOUSTON/NEWORLEANS/HATTIESBURG TOUR UPDATE

First stop of the driving out west leg of the tour was in Hattiesburg Mississippi. I learned awhile ago not to underestimate playing in towns I’d never heard of/thought had a “scene” and this was no exception. Party got rammed and kids were really into the tunes, though I think I scared some of em with Fall of Man.

The venue was also pretty sick, apparently the owners parents own a scrap yard and he gets first picks of all the random cool shit people throw away, like that pillar in the first image that the speakers were sitting on. I also drank some bullshit ass moonshine that I found out after the fact they carry in liquor stores, BORING. Though the next day in New Orleans I had some amazing “Cat Daddy Moonshine” at a restaurant called Cochon, highly recommend.

Next stop New Orleans, probably my new favorite city in America in terms of how cool the whole city looks. There is seriously no city that I’ve been to in the world that looks like NOLA, makes me wanna move there if their airport didnt suck and it wasnt so fucking humid, CHECK OUT THAT FUCKING CAT BUILDING! The party itself was in a bar called The Saint, which is pretty rad as far as dive bar type joints go, the gig itself was ruined by a crazed 40 something year old fan who kept punching me and slapping me for a. not tweeting back at her b. not replying to her facebook messages c. taking a drink while she was trying to take a photo of me and i can only assume d. not wanting to sleep with her. Remind me to travel with a bodyguard.

Also got to talk some shit on WLUT for about an hour before I had to dj, I somehow managed not to curse or say anything too disparaging about anyone.

Love to the Rhythm Killers for the party!

The drive from New Orleans to Houston was made infinitely better by the presence of the daquiris we picked up in this sweet ass drive through. I somehow forgot to take photos in Houston, but I got to play in a converted firehouse that my comrade Drop the Lime recommended I try to play in. Party was pretty rad except for the fact that one of the opening djs played BLOODRAVE, seriously, locals/openers learn how to warm up a room, playing every banger in your crate, ESPECIALLY THE TRACK THAT THE GUY HEADLINING THE PARTY MADE, is a really fucking bad look, youre not impressing people, and promoters, QUIT BOOKING THESE PEOPLE TO OPEN. The sign of a great dj was exhibited by my old houston friend Damon Allen who played a sick techno set right before I had to go on. Also some killer djs playing some great Italo disco cuts out on the back area made me glad that people still give a shit about other music, so big ups to the Ceeplusknives crew in Houston for repping shit hard.

We drove the next 2 days from Houston to LA and the Naluark followed us, fucking prick, LEAVE ME ALONE!

TOUR DIARY: RICHMOND

The first non festival tourdate was Richmond with some of my favorite dudes, the Audio Ammo crew. Right as I got into the city I realized that they had put me in a hotel next to a Sheetz. For those of you who dont know what Sheetz is, it basically has one of the most entertaining ways for a drunk person to order food, via touchscreen.

Afterword the bonuses keep piling up when I find out Alex has gotten me the 4 Magic: The Gathering booster parks that I have on my rider:

and then he takes us to one of the best dinners I’ve had a promoter take me to, where not only did they make the best dirty vodka martini I’ve ever had, but had an amazing cheeseplate (fuck you thats important). The party itself was fun, I ended up drinking beer out of a pitcher and playing hardstyle at the end:

Totally missed out on taking photos at the Confederate Whitehouse but did manage to find this little gem on the road:

keep your eyes peeled on this site for some cameos of the killer rebel swag I picked up here, I have a feeling it’ll go over well at my next gig this thursday in Mississippi.

SXSW RECAP

Some people cant wait for SXSW so they can see their favorite and up and coming bands/djs/producers in an intimate venue.  Those people are idiots, I cant wait for SXSW so I can go nuts on the best beef brisket I’ve ever had in my life.  Some people may disagree with me but I’ve eaten at Rudy’s atleast a dozen times, and at different locations mind you, and everytime the brisket is the same, FUCKING AMAZING.  Its so good I came here twice, the Nashville don Myrryrs even remarked that it was the best brisket hes had in his life (this makes up for him DJing for Ke$ha).

Now for the music, I got into Austin later than most of my friends (Friday) but was picked up by local man about town King Louie.  Myself and a good chunk of the T&B folks were supposed to play the Lose Control afterparty but it was shut down, which most of us didnt mind because it meant we could go support Drop the Lime at the Fools Gold afterparty that was in a MALL!   Heres a vid of Dracula the Lime dropping my new single BLOODRAVE at said party (nextdoor to a Wet Seal)

I ended up passing out on the couch at the Trouble & Bass frathouse and was awoken at 10am by Drop the Lime coming back from Starbucks with coffee and brownies for everyone and getting us outside to bash this pinata to amp us up for the raging that was to come:

Party started at noon and went til 7pm, so inevitably there was a lunchbreak, which provided this sweet photo op:

I was then given the coveted closing spot from 6:15pm to 7pm to close the party out, I can easily say it was one of the best shows of my life, heres some vids:

Check out that fucking pit!

What? You dont close your sets with bro hymn tribute? You’re fucking up!

Later that night I decided to tag along with the aforementioned King Louie to his Peligrosa party he does with the dude with the manliest beard DJ Orion at Franks. I’d seen Jubilee twittering about the party before and they had some pretty heavy hitters lined up to DJ (Dave Nada, Brodinski, Toy Selectah, Samo Soundboy, Brenmar etc) but holy shit was I not prepared for this party, first DJ I saw was a guy named DJ Dus who was STRAIGHT KILLING it with cumbia jams that had the 80% crowd of girls dancing. I also got to heard 3ball (or as Jillionaire likes to call it “Donkey Music”) out (man I’m late to that game) which I have to say I’m addicted to now. Best part about it is that while it is considered one of the new “hip ethnic” genres, the original following of Mexicans from Monterrey rock boots like these when they go listen to it in the club:

LOOK AT THOSE FUCKING BOOTS! And those things on his legs are lights powered by a battery pack in his pocket! So bonkers!

Next day I got to play the Smog party at 222 Club

Got stuck playing early due to the lineup being fucking bonkers but it gave me the opportunity to play jams like this one:

FUCKING TUNE, big ups to Numbernin6 for sorting me with that one, all you kids who think dubstep is only midrange aggression need to get to the roots and know that the shit is about being DARK and SUB BASS!

Didnt get many more photos due to being distracted by the amount of free whiskey shots we were able to finangle but AC Slater + Dell and Flinch were both SUPERB, I did also manage to get a photo of these broads getting MARKED backstage.

Big ups to Smog + Mad Classy crew for the big party!

Ultra Recap 2

Saturday night I got to finally go to the Overthrow Castle for this legendary party, I got there as my Sound Pellegrino fam was dropping hits and exclusives.  I got a pretty amazing timeslot right after Bart B More (who is a real nice dude, whats the deal with these Dutch guys being so chill, I’ll let you come up with your own theories) but got pitted against Samo Sound Boy (another dude who is killing it) who was playing the side room, needless to say as soon as I was done I ran straight over and danced to the last few minutes of his set.  Everyone who played totally killed it especially the final B. Rich + Udachi tag team where I’m pretty sure they only played their own tunes, SO BIG, those dudes are the absolute best.  Overall the party was awesome and I ended up drinking too much tequila and Prometheus Springs cocktails (big ups to Overthrow for having such great hospitality).

Next day I went over to the Catalina hotel to play for bass queen Reid Speed’s Play Me Pool Party.  I got there to find out that someone was playing too hard too early so they had to move the party to the lobby inside, where I found Udachi tagteaming with Canblaster (!!!).   I took this opportunity to play some shit I dont get to normally play (cumbia), found a throne, grabbed a mojito, and watched the hot latinas that worked at the hotel groove around.

Overall Miami was great, big thanks to my Trouble & Bass brothers and sisters, Smog crew especially Drew the Don, Overthrow fam, Johnny the Boy, and Reid Speed for letting me play their parties and take advantage of their hospitality.

Ultra Recap Part 1

Ultra week (and SXSW in Austin) in miami is a big excuse for DJs to get drunk with each other and let each other know how much we miss each other and love each others music.  Right?  Whatever, got into Miami on Thursday went straight to The Standard and saw too many of my old friends to mention, then I got to play this complete fucking rager of a party:

I gotta say, I didnt see most of the headliners in the main room play due to the overabundance of sweaty bros but amongst the people that I got to see kill it were: Jubilee, Supra1, XI, Untold, Roska, Flinch, and Dave Nada.   Friday we got to spend the day at a mansion party on one of the Venetian islands that is the first photo of this post, where I got a free haircut

then ran into Orgasmic, who around 3 years ago thought he cut my finger off by slamming it in a car door, footage of which can be found in the Institubes 2008 US tour video which is here: http://vimeo.com/909977

still got all my fingers and he still has the sweetest ponytail in dance music.

Also heres a video of Turtle dancing during Brodinski’s set, cameos by Zombies for Money and Jerome from LOLboys
